Yet another Malayalam news channel goes on air on Thursday, with the launch of Malayala Manorama group's new venture, Manorama News (MM News). Kerala already has about a dozen satellite channels and has the distinction of being the State with the largest number of regional channels. Five more channels are in the offing. MM News will join the battlelines where three major news channels Asianet News, India Vision and People TV - are already vying for a share of viewership as well as the ad pie. Nowhere else in the country would regional news channels command such a dedicated viewership. The literate Malayali is always news-starved and hence the question whether there is space for another news channel does not arise. The channel, according to reports, will have a current news format with a handful of entertainment programmes thrown in. Discussion forums and chat shows on serious social issues will also be included.
