Corrections and clarifications

  • Referring to the report "Leopard skin seized, six held" (Tamil Nadu, August 15, 2006), a reader said the heading was incorrect as the report was on how Forest Department officials in Udhagamandalam had seized the skins of two leopard cats and arrested six persons. It was an editing error and the heading should have been "Leopard cat skin seized, six held". The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a small wild cat and can be found all across South East Asia. The extent of its range has led to fragmentation, and as a result a large number of sub-species (between seven to ten) have been recognised. The leopard, with more than 20 subspecies (genus Panthera), is a large wild cat.
