Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Trilok Nath Perti, General Manager of South Western Railway, has said work on gauge conversion between Bijapur and Bagalkot is nearing completion and will be opened for rail traffic shortly.

He was speaking at the 60th Independence Day celebrations held at the Railway Grounds here on Tuesday after the hoisting the Tricolour and receiving guard of honour from various contingents of the Railway Police, Scouts and Guides.

Mr. Perti said track-doubling work on the Toranagallu-Hospet section would be completed this year. This would help enhance passenger and freight movement.

The works for doubling of Bangalore- Tumkur and Bangalore- Ramanagaram were also progressing well and would be completed up to Doddabeli from Yashwanthpur end and up to Bidadi from Bangalore end this year, he added.

He said the zone had registered a growth of 16.69 per cent in the freight loading in the first four months of the financial year 2006-07 and as a result the freight earnings have gone up by 28.87 per cent compared to previous financial year.
