`Galeru Nagari in two years'

Mohd Ali Shabbir lays foundation stone for two sub-stations

KADAPA: Galeru Nagari Sujala Sravanthi project will be completed in two years and it would meet the drinking water needs of Tirupati town, Minister for Information and Power Mohd. Ali Shabbir said on Tuesday.

Work on the project's first phase comprising Gandikota reservoir and main canal costing Rs. 250.20 crores and Vamikondasagar and Sarvarajasagar reservoirs costing Rs. 294.45 crores envisaging irrigation of 1.55 lakh acres were progressing briskly, he said in his Independence Day address after hoisting the national flag at Police Parade Grounds here. Tenders were called for the second phase works costing Rs. 2,189.26 crores which would irrigate 1.20 lakh acres and supply drinking water to Tirupati.

Telugu Ganga project envisaging irrigation of 1.87 lakh acres and supplying drinking water to Chennai was allocated at Rs. 432.72 crores, the Minister said. He lamented that farmers raised crops only in 62,850 hectares due to rainfall deficiency. A pilot project to develop dairying was taken up in Rajampet and Kodur and 1,000 milch cows would be distributed in each mandal.

Developmental works worth Rs. 245 crores were undertaken under Indiramma scheme in 355 villages under the first phase, the Minister said. The Minister also laid foundation stones for a 220/kv sub-station proposed at Pulivendula and a 132 kv Moolavanka sub-station, at Moolavanka in Chintakommadinne mandal on Tuesday.

The sub-station at Pulivendula was estimated to cost Rs. 32.76 crores and would be completed in one and half months, he told newsmen at Moolavanka. A 32-km-long electrical line would be laid from Rayalaseema thermal power plant at Kalamalla to Pulivendula. The sub-station would augment power supply to 139 villages in Pulivendula, Thondur, Simhadripuram, Vemula, Vempalle, Pendlimarry and Chakrayapet mandals.

The sub-station at Moolavanka was estimated to cost Rs. 8.76 crores and would be completed in one year. It would benefit 60 villages in Kadapa, Pendlimarry and Chintakommadinne mandals.
