Kalam, Vajpayee to attend ceremony

BIJAPUR: Water Resources Minister K.S. Eshwarappa on Tuesday said that apart from President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the former Prime Ministers A.B. Vajpayee and H.D. Deve Gowda would participate in the Upper Krishna Project dedication ceremony to be held at the Alamatti dam site on August 21.

Addressing a press conference here, he said the Alamatt reservoir, a multipurpose component of the UKP, would be named after the late Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Prime Minister, who laid foundation stone for the dam in 1964.

The UKP will irrigate 6.22 lakh hectares utilising 173 tmcft of water. A sum of Rs. 9,479 crore was spent on the project. — Staff Correspondent

Two trucks, rectified spirit seized

BANGALORE: The vigilance squad of the Excise Department intercepted two trucks here on Monday and seized 24,000 litres of rectified spirit being illegally transported.

An official release said the squad intercepted the trucks, registered in Tamil Nadu, at JP Nagar and Subhash Nagar. They found spirit being transported in 710 plastic cans and arrested four persons: Afsar Pasha, Selvam, Prakash C. Madai and T. Suresh Babu. Tippeswamy, Honnarpet Ilango, Lokesh and Bhaskar managed to escape.

Documents said the trucks were carrying vehicle spare parts from Pune to Karaikal in Tamil Nadu. The value of seized vehicles and spirit was Rs. 20 lakh, the release added. — Staff Reporter

Fisheries harbours to be developed

Udupi: Fisheries Minister B. Nagaraj Shetty said on Monday that steps would be taken to develop the Malpe, Hejmady and Ullal fisheries harbours. He was speaking at the inauguration of two high-mast lamps at the Malpe fisheries harbour here.

Mr. Shetty said the Government was planning to develop the Ullal and Hejmady fisheries harbours with the help of private agencies. A preliminary report on the development of the two harbours was ready. A company of Malaysian origin had shown interest in their development, he said.

The Government would soon take steps for the development of the Malpe fisheries harbour at a cost of Rs. 2.05 crore. Of this amount, Rs. 80 lakh would be spent on the construction of an auction hall. The Government planned to develop the third stage of the Malpe harbour and the second stage of the Mangalore harbour, Mr. Shetty said.

Medical Education Minister V.S. Acharya said the Government would provide safety equipment at the Malpe harbour to be used to help fishermen when the sea is rough. — Staff Correspondent

Nominated to Board of Directors

Bangalore: The Union Government has nominated People's Vigilance Civil Rights Association president T.C. Nagaraju non-official director of the Karnataka State Warehousing Corporation for a period of three years with immediate effect. Mr. Nagaraju served as a member of the Board of Directors of the corporation from 1995 to 1998. — Staff Reporter

Expedition to the Himalayas

Bangalore: The Adventure Sports Association of India (ASAI) has organised `Rudugaira 2006,' a high-altitude expedition in the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttaranchal from August 18 to September 10. A 60-member team drawn from 14 States is participating in the expedition. It includes 28 members from Karnataka. Malleshwaram MLA M.R. Seetharam, who is the president of the ASAI, will flag off the expedition at 1 p.m. from the Press Club of Bangalore on Wednesday.

Missing man's body found

BELLARY: Leelendra, son of Kishore Babu, contractor, was found murdered at a canal on Kolagal road. Leelendra (26) was missing since August 11 and a case was registered in Cowl Bazar police station on the next day. His father in the complaint had said that his son had been missing from a dhabha on the outskirts of the city. His body was found on Tuesday in a canal with his hands and legs tied. Bellary (Rural) police have now registered a case of murder and have taken up investigation. — Staff Correspondent

Gulbarga-Goa bus service inaugurated

GULBARGA: Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur and Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik on Tuesday inaugurated a new bus service from Gulbarga to Goa introduced by the North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC). The super deluxe would play between Gulbarga and Goa via Pune and Pandarapur. — Special Correspondent

Ambedkar Bhavan getting ready

HASSAN: Work on Ambedkar Bhavan will be completed soon and will be inaugurated on October 2, Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna has said. Participating in a programme organised by District Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Forum at Kalabhan recently, the Minister said that the Ambedkar Bhavan should become a centre to study and discuss the works of Dr. Ambedkar and his ideals.

Drive against overloading

BIDAR: The National Highway Authority of India will offload overloaded vehicles on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway across the district on Friday and Saturday. This is part of an awareness programme about the ill-effects of overloading, said a release by the assistant executive engineer of the NHAI. — Staff Correspondent

HASSAN: "Jana-Navoo Iddeve", a socio-cultural forum, observed Independence Day in a unique way on Tuesday. Lakshmamma of Kadadaravalli, who was released from bonded labour, unfurled the National Flag at the stroke of midnight near Hamavathi Statue. Journalist P. Manjunath, who spoke on the occasion, said that despite being released from bonded labour and allotted land, five persons, including Lakshmamma, were not in a position to cultivate as some people from upper castes had encroached on their land. The five submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner K.H.

Ban order along canal

RAICHUR: The district administration has imposed ban orders under Section 144 along the Tungabhadra Left Bank Canal between 62nd mile and 92nd mile in Manvi taluk of Raichur district to maintain proper water supply till the tail-end of the canal. Releasing an order in this regard on Tuesday, the district administration has warned that people who indulged in unauthorised lifting of gates would be punished. Deputy Commissioner Tushar Girinath has asked Superintendent of Police R. Hitendra to strengthen security on the stretch of the canal. — Staff Correspondent
