Indians disappoint

BEIJING: Indian quarter-milers went out, not unexpectedly, in the opening round of the World junior athletics championships here on Tuesday.

Virender Kumar Pankaj clocked a decent 47.60 seconds while coming third in his heats of the 400 metres while V. B. Bineesh was fifth in his heats with a timing of 48.60 seconds.

M.R. Poovamma came seventh and last in her 400m heats in 56.39 seconds. In the evening session, Indian athletes also went out in the opening rounds of the men and women's 800 metres.

In the men's 800m, Sajeesh Joseph could manage only a sixth place in his heats with a time of 1:51.48. The top three in each heats plus six fastest losers qualified for the next round. The poorest qualifier timed 1:50.56. In the women's 800m, Jhuma Khatun also came sixth in her heats, clocking 2:12.31. The top four in each heats plus four fastest losers made it to the next round. The poorest qualifier timed 2:08.05.
