CHENNAI: Leg-spinner Azhar Shaikh returned a match haul of nine for 88 as Vidharba defeated Tripura by an innings and 116 runs on the second day of the Mindteck-Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament, at the CPT-IP grounds here on Tuesday. Tripura was bowled out for 123 in 63.3 overs in reply to Vidhraba's first innings score of 309. Azhar demolished the Tripura batting with figures of eight for 54. Rana Dutta was the top-scorer with an unbeaten 33. Tripura followed on after conceding a first-innings lead of 186 runs and managed only 70 for the loss of four wickets in the allotted 45 overs. Vidharba secured eight points through this victory.
Varma shines
At ICL-Gurunanak, Andhra managed a 15-run first-innings lead over Mumbai Colts, thanks to A.S.K. Varma's unbeaten century. Chasing Mumbai Colts' first innings score of 272, Andhra lost wickets at regular intervals and was 93 for four at one stage. But Varma, along with A.G. Pradeep (60), added 108 runs for the fifth wicket. The former was also involved in another useful 56-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Mohammed Faiq help Andhra take the lead.
Interesting situation
At Mayajaal, Combined Districts needs another 79 runs off 37 overs to pull off a win over Maharashtra. Combined Districts made 148 in its first innings in reply to Mahrashtra's 118, a lead of 30 runs. In the second innings, Maharashtra was all out for 133 with A. Avinash picking up four wickets. Yognesh Takwale (49) was the only one who offered some resistance. At stumps, needing 104 for victory Combined Districts was 25 for no loss in eight overs.
Bad light stops play
At SRMC Turf grounds, TNCA President's XI was 251 for eight in 71.3 overs when bad light stopped play. TNCA is still 85 short of Gujarat's first innings score of 336. R. Prasanna made 75, while opener S. Anirudha made a quickfire 44 off 37 balls. Left-arm spinner Jagdish Patel's five-wicket haul restricted the run flow.
Nikil misses hundred
At Viveka, Nikil Doru fell four short of a century as Rajasthan made 237 in 86.1 overs. In reply, Kerala XI was 108 for four in 43.1 overs. Openers A.V. Jagadeesh and Abhishek Hegde put on 57. Mohammed Aslam took all the four Kerala wickets that fell. The scores: Vidharba 309 in 90 overs bt Tripura 123 (Azhar Shaikh eight for 54) and 70 for four in 45 overs. Vidharba: 8 points, Tripura: 0. Mumbai Colts 272 for nine vs. Andhra 287 for nine in 90 overs (A.S.K. Varma 113 not out, A.G. Pradeep 60). Maharashtra 118 and 133 in 43.1 overs (Yognesh Takwale 49, A. Avinash four for 27) vs. Combined Districts 148 in 60.4 overs and 25 for no loss in 8 overs. Gujarat 336 for eight in 90 overs vs. TNCA President's XI 251 for eight in 71.3 overs (R. Prasanna 75, S. Anirudha 44, Jagdish Patel five for 56). Rajasthan 237 in 86.1 overs (Nikil Doru 96, S. Aneesh four for 53) vs. Kerala 108 for four in 43.1 overs (Mohammed Aslam four for 21).
