DHARWAD: Apart from making efforts to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the nation, citizens should contribute to the development of society, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar has said. Speaking after hoisting the National Flag at the R.N. Shetty Stadium here on Tuesday, the district-in-charge Minister said recalling the contribution of freedom fighters would inspire people to take up nation-building activities. Highlighting the development works in the district, he said the district administration planned to construct toilets for 1,19,648 families under the "Sampoorn Grameen Nairmalya" scheme in the next four years. The Centre had approved the Rs. 6.32-crore action plan for the project. As many 54,104 small and very small farmers had been given seeds at subsidised rates, he added. On the development of the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad, Mr. Shettar said the Hubli-Dharwad Municipal Corporation had spent Rs. 47 crore for developing infrastructure. As part of the "Suvarna Karnataka" celebration a cultural complex at a cost of Rs. 60 lakh was being constructed at Dharwad, which was scheduled to be completed before "Rajyotsava", he added. Earlier, the Minister received the guard of honour from the contingents of the police, the Home Guards, NCC, the Seva Dal and Scouts. K.D. Malligawad, Deputy Superintendent of Police, led the march-past. President of the Dharwad Zilla Panchayat Geeta Patil, vice-president B.B. Gangadharmath, Deputy Commissioner M.S. Srikar, Police Commissioner Narayan Nadamani, Superintendent of Police B. Shrikanthappa and others participated in the Independence Day celebrations. Mr. Srikar and Ms. Patil hoisted the National flag at separate functions. Tahsildar of Hubli taluk S.S. Nagathana hoisted the National Flag at the Independence Day celebrations at Nehru Ground in Hubli on Tuesday. He called upon everyone to contribute to nation-building and underscored the need to make children good citizens. Presiding over the function, former Minister A.M. Hindasageri called upon teachers to prepare children to discharge their duties towards their country.
At Gadag
Minister for Tourism and Textiles and district-in-charge Sriramulu hoisted the National Flag at the K.H. Patil Stadium in Gadag on Tuesday. Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council H.K. Patil, MLA D.R. Patil, Deputy Commissioner G.M. Dhananjaya, Superintendent of Police K.V. Sridhar and others were present. Students of various schools presented cultural programmes.
At Haveri
Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj and district-in-charge C.M. Udasi hoisted the National Flag at the district stadium in Haveri on Tuesday. Manjunath Kunnur, MP from Dharwad South, in-charge Deputy Commissioner Ajay Nagabhushan, Chief Executive Officer of Zilla Panchayat K.S. Aralikatti, Superintendent of Police H.N. Siddanna and others were present.
