New Delhi: For the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, Independence Day was celebrated on its premises on Tuesday. Chief Justice of India Y.K. Sabharwal unfurled the Tricolour and congratulated the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) for organising the function on the court lawns. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, also a senior lawyer, said: "There is no confrontation between Parliament and the judiciary and the impression created about the confrontation is wrong."

Mr. Justice Sabharwal, sharing the same sentiment, said both the pillars of democracy were doing their own job. Supreme Court and Delhi High Court judges, both sitting and retired, and members of the Bar were present. However, none of the Ministers and Members of Parliament, who are members of the SCBA, turned up. Eight Union Ministers are members of the association. UNI
