Plea to Corporation

KOLLAM: The Kollam Residents Apex Council has alleged that the Kollam Corporation was not convening the mandatory ward committee gathering. In a statement here council general secretary C. Amalolbhavan said that this was a violation of the Constitution.

He said that even the previous rulers of the corporation had not taken measures to convene ward committee sessions. Under the concerned Act it is mandatory that the ward committees should organise sessions once every three months. Mr. Amalolbhavan has urged the corporation authorities to ensure people's participation in development activities in the corporation.

Spirit seized

KOLLAM: In two separate raids by the police and the Excise Department at Chadayamangalam on Tuesday, huge quantities of spirit were seized. Both the seizures were made from two houses that had no occupants at the time of the raid. The police seized 3,500 litres of spirit from one of the houses. The spirit was found stored in 100 cans of 35-litre capacity each. The Excise Department seized 700 litres of spirit from another house. The spirit was found stored in 20 cans of 35-litre capacity each.

Cases have been registered against the owners of the house.

KSEB worker electrocuted

KOTTAYAM: A contract labourer with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) was electrocuted when he was engaged in maintenance work on the line at Chananganassery on Tuesday noon. Mathukutty, 45, of Aattupuram House at Poovam near Payippad, was working on the electricity line near the municipal office at Chananassery when the accident occurred.

Meeting on food security held

THRISSUR: The former Defence Minister and convener of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) George Fernandez said the interference of foreign forces in our agriculture sector is a threat to India's security. He was inaugurating a meeting on Food Security organised by Janata Dal (United) here on Tuesday.

Mr. Fernandez said interference of the foreign agencies had lowered the price of the local agricultural produce drastically. As many as 500 farmers had committed suicide and the State Government had failed to take steps to ensure social justice to the farmers, he said. — Staff Reporter
