ANIMAL MIGHT: A view of the cattle race held at Anandappally near Adoor on Tueday.
PATHANAMTHITTA: The annual cattle race of Anandappally was held in a festive mood on Palasserry paddy fields at Anandappally, near Adoor, on Tuesday. Hundreds of race-lovers from far-off places, including foreign tourists, thronged the small village to witness the annual cattle race, jointly organised by the Anandappally Karshaka Samiti and the Adoor municipality. Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran inaugurated the annual event at a function presided over by the local MLA, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan. Education Minister M.A. Baby also attended the inaugural function. The cattle race in South Kerala has a history of 200 years as a harvest festival called `Maramadi Mahotsavom,' Stanly, general convenor of the organising committee, said. According to him, 45 pairs of cattle participated in the race held in A and B categories at Anandappally. The race is a costly affair, and the cattle owners had to spend about Rs. 70,000 on each pair towards food, remuneration to the jockey and runners, and so on, Mr. Stanly said.
