KOLLAM: Kodikunnil Suresh, vice-chairman of Nehru Yuva Kendra, has said that his organisation will ensure participation of youth in the nation-building process. At a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Suresh said that an awareness programme would also be undertaken by the kendra to prepare the youth to counter terrorism and social evils. With this aim in mind, the kendra targeted establishing affiliate youth clubs in every ward in Kollam district. A special project in this connection would be inaugurated on August 20. The kendra had evolved a scheme to encourage the youth to constitute such affiliate clubs. As per the scheme, clubs registering with the kendra, which were not three years old, would be given a promotion grant of Rs. 10,000 each. Clubs which had completed three years after registration would be given a grant of Rs. 30,000. For encouraging these clubs into social service activities, special awards at the district, State and national levels had been instituted. The awards carried cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 1 lakh, respectively. Under a youth exchange programme organised by the kendra, a team comprising 33 youth from Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir would be in Kollam district during the last week of August. The kendra would be opening a youth counselling centre at Kollam. The centre would function from its office at S.N. College junction. Service would be free of charges. A reference library for competitive examinations would be opened in the district. Mr. Suresh said that a competitive examination training centre would also be opened in Kollam by the kendra. At the tsunami-hit Alapad panchayat, where there were 13 wards, the kendra would allocate funds for the construction of buildings for youth clubs that had their own land. The kendra would be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the First War of Independence, better known as the Sepoy Mutiny.
