HYDERABAD: T. Purushothaman of Guntur emerged champion with 7.5 points in the men's section of the 44th State Open chess tournament (selection tournament for National `B') for Brilliant Trophy here on Tuesday. M. Vinay Kumar of Vijayawada (7.5) and Rishipal Singh of Hyderabad (7) were placed second and third respectively. T. Purushothaman, M. Vinay Kumar, Rishipal Singh and P. Praveen Prasad qualified for the National `B' championship to be held in Ahmedabad from September 1 to 10. K. Narayana Reddy, Director of BGHS, gave away the prizes. The final placings: Men: 1. T. Purushothaman (7.5), 2. M. Vinay Kumar (7.5), 3. Rishipal Singh (7), 4. P. Praveen Prasad (7), 5. J.K. Raju (7), 6. S. Vikramjit Singh (6.5), 7. M.Deepthams Reddy (6.5), 8.Venu Madhav Sharma (6.5), 9. Ch. Meher C. Reddy (6), 10. M.Y. Raju (6).
Holy Mary triumphs
Holy Mary Institute of Technology won the third Bandari Srinivas inter-engineering college cricket tournament with a thrilling seven-run win against Vidya Jyothi Institute of Technology in the final at Chevella near here on Monday. Batting first, Holy Mary scored 147 in 25 overs. In reply, VJIT looked set to romp home with Harish hitting a breezy (50, 8x4, 1x6). But Tirupathi Reddy struck two blows in succession in one over to reduce VJIT to 127 for eight and then VJIT never recovered. Special prizes were given to Adiya of VJIT (man of the series), Vignesh of Holy Mary (player of the final and best bowler of the tournament).
Fine spell by Laxman
Good bowling by Laxman (five for four) helped All Saint's High School record a seven-wicket win against Delhi Public School in the Glendale Trophy inter-school (under-13) cricket tournament here. The scores: Jubilee Hills PS 116 (Naitik four for 13) lost to DRS School 117 for four (Nishanth Reddy 50); DPS 58 (Laxman five for four, Manish three for 13) lost to All Saint's HS 59 for three (Himalay 31); International School 52 (Saiteja three for 12, Surya Kiran four for nine) lost to Ivy League 53 for two.
Ankith clinches title
M. Ankith Reddy and Akshana won the singles titles in the boys and girls sections respectively in the Ranga Reddy District Lawn Tennis Association floodlit tennis tournament organised by Sports Coaching Foundation (Masab Tank) on it's courts here. Ankith defeated Anirudh 8-0 in the boys final while Akshana got the better of M. Manaswini 8-6 in the other final. Murali Krishna, IPS, gave away the prizes. The results: Boys: U-10: M. Ankith Reddy bt Anirudh Yadav 8-0. Semifinals: M. Ankith Reddy bt Anvtej 6-3; Anirudh Yadav bt Ahmed 6-4. U-14: Surya Pawan bt Hamza Ghouse 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Girls: U-10: Final: Akshana bt M. Manaswini 8-6. U-14: Final: Surya Tejeswani bt K. Bhavana Reddy 10-8. Semifinals: Surya Tejaswini bt Shanbhavi Dixit 8-1; K. Bhavana Reddy bt V.M. Leena Reddy 8-1.
Football coaching
The State-level coaching camp cum selection trials to pick the State team for the forthcoming Santosh Trophy national championship will be held from August 18 at Lal Bahadur Stadium. The camp will be organised by the Andhra Pradesh Football Association under the supervision of Arjuna Awardee Mohd Habeeb. For details call 23234433.
