CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Governor and Administrator of the Union Territory of Chandigarh, S.F. Rodrigues, on Tuesday paid tributes to the freedom fighters and martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the independence of the country and expressed solidarity and gratitude to the armed forces for continuously protecting the unity, integrity, sovereignty and the external borders. Delivering the Independence Day speech at the Parade Grounds here, Gen. Rodrigues said that the Chandigarh Administration had established a War Memorial in honour of the martyrs of the Defence Forces hailing from Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Himachal. This memorial would have the names of nearly 8,500 martyrs, he added. Chandigarh, he said, symbolised modern India because it was one of the most rapidly progressing cities in the country. He announced that each village would be developed in accordance with the specific town plan prepared for it. An environment shield would be provided around each village. Adequate land would be exempted from the Periphery Control Act. The necessary resources would partly come from the Administration and partly by the Corporation, by levying conversion and development charges, as appropriate.
