Meet to discuss smelter unit reopening tomorrow

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A meeting on issues related to possible reopening of the smelter unit of Hindalco will be held in the State capital on Thursday. The meeting was earlier scheduled for Monday.

The meeting comes more than three years after the smelter unit of Hindalco (formerly Indal) at Alupuram was closed. Representatives of the management of Hindalco, an Aditya Birla group company, Kerala State Electricity Board and trade union leaders are among those expected to participate in the meeting.

The smelter unit was closed on August 1, 2003 as the company management claimed that it was economically unviable to operate the unit in the face of rising power charges. More than 300 employees had been advised to stay at home after the smelter unit was closed.
