Kozhikode rail station modernisation by March

Works will be completed in a time-bound manner: Railways

KOZHIKODE: Modernisation works now under way at the Kozhikode railway station will be completed by March 2007, Divisional Manager A.K. Harith said.

He assured a delegation of the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry led by president C.E.Chakunni that the works including the building of a pit line and extension of the first platform would be completed in a time-bound manner.

The other works were building of the entrance and an approach road to the fourth platform, car parking lots and construction of a foot overbridge to connect all four platforms.

The delegation, which had presented a memorandum on the difficulties faced by Malabar passengers and the urgency for better infrastructure were assured that more bogies would be added to trains for which there was a heavy rush.

The Railways was considering the proposal to run the Kannur-Yaswantpur Express three days a week.

The memorandum highlighted the urgency of doubling the Shoranur-Mangalore line, the need to change the timings of the West Coast Express, extension of a number of trains including the Venad Express and the Malsyagandhi Express to Kozhikode, and restoring reservation in 6601/6602 Chennai Mail and 6627/6628 West Coast Express.

Mr. Harith said the reservation token system at the Kozhikode station, would be restored within a fortnight.

Senior officials of the railways, including Senior Divisional Commercial Manager T. Balan, Divisional Safety Officer S.T. Ramalingam, Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer N.P. Krishnan and Kozhikode Station Manager V. V. Soman, participated in the discussions.
