NEW DELHI: Noted academician Nand Lal Gupta died of cardiac congestion here this past Friday. He was 86. He is survived by his wife and three children. Fondly known as N.L. to his friends, he taught at Delhi University's Kirori Mal College from 1956 to 1986. He spent his life fighting communalism and Rightist forces. He wrote several pamphlets for "Sampradayikta Virodhi Samiti''. A member of DU's Academic Council, Prof. Gupta was also an active member of the Communist Party of India and later rose to become a member of the party's Delhi State Executive. Prof. Gupta edited a number of books, including "Nehru on Communalism" and "Communal Riots in India". A gold medallist from the University of Punjab at Lahore, he secured the first position in M.A. political science in 1944. During his 30-year teaching career Prof. Gupta inspired a whole generation of students.
