MANGALORE: The State Government is planning to develop a harbour at Chitrapura-Kulai and construct a new fisheries jetty at Ullal, B. Nagaraj Shetty, Minister for Fisheries and Endowment, said here on Tuesday.

He was delivering the Independence Day address at the Nehru Maidan. He said that the Government was planning to take up the third phase of developmental work at fisheries harbour (old port at Bunder) here. The old port had been developed at an estimated cost of Rs. 1.50 crore.

River project

He said that the Government had given Rs. 97.80 lakh subsidy to 326 families of fishermen in Dakshina Kannada for construction of houses. In this financial year the Government had planned to construct 10,000 homes for fishermen in the State, he added.

The Minister said the Government recently sanctioned 14 high schools for rural areas in the district. In addition, five new pre-university colleges have been sanctioned to the district and a residential school to Bantwal Assembly constituency. The process of computerising ration cards in Belthangady and Sullia taluks had been completed.

The Minister said that the Government is keen to take up inter-linking of rivers in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts.

In the Independence Day parade held on the occasion, senior Naval girls' group and Bharat Seva Dal girls' group won the first and second prizes respectively. The Minister gave away the rolling trophies to the winning groups.

Contribution

He also gave away a cheque for Rs. 50,000 each to the family members of two fishermen who died in boat mishaps here recently.
