Independence Day celebrated with fervour

    HYDERABAD: Patriotic fervour marked the 60th Independence Day celebrations by several Central and State organisations on Tuesday.

    D. N. Mathur, General Manager, South Central Railway, unfurled the flag and inspected the guard of honour presented at a parade in Secunderabad. He highlighted achievements in the first quarter of the current year and said 2006 was special for SCR as it completed 40 years of service. He announced cash awards to various departments for their performance in the celebrations.

    S. K. Goyal Executive Director BHEL, hoisted the tricolour at the corporate R & D division. Addressing the gathering, he recalled the services rendered by the organisation in strengthening the country's infrastructure.

    Call for dedication

    G. P. Srivastava, CMD of ECIL took the salute at a guard of honour presented by CISF. He appealed to the staff to work with dedication for strengthening the corporation. G. Narsing Rao, general secretary, ECIL Employees' Union, and V. Veerabbayi, secretary, ECIL Officers' Association, spoke. He presented mementos to best students of AEC-1 and children.

    M. V. Krishna Rao, Vice-Chairman and MD, APSRTC, addressing the Independence Day celebrations, praised the employees for earning Rs.150-crore profit during the last four months and achieving 70 per cent occupancy ratio.

    K. Ramakrishnan, CMD, Andhra Bank, stressed that economic independence of the common man was need of the hour. He urged bankers and staff to be instruments of social change, particularly in the flood-hit districts.

    Achievements focused

    J. K. Sikder, GM, NTPC, unfurled the flag in the presence of senior executives, employees and their family members. He said the corporation was set to achieve the status of 66,000-mw plus firm by 2017.

    Anand Mohan, ED, Power Grid, addressing the employees, highlighted the achievements of the organisation. He urged the staff to contribute more effectively to the country's development. He gave away prizes to winners of various competitions.

    Colourful parade

    A colourful parade was organised at the National Industrial Security Academy of the CISF. Anurag Sharma, IG and Director, took the salute at the parade and hoisted the tricolour. He advised the staff to maintain high standards while discharging duties. He gave away prizes to children who won drawing/painting competitions.

    Kamal Kumar, Director, National Police Academy, unfurled the flag and addressed IPS probationers and academy staff, who presented an impressive march-past. The probationers, staff and faculty and their families took part in several colourful events.

    Justice M.Narayana Reddy, Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal, hoisted the tricolour watched by the members and staff.

    Andhra Pradesh Chemists and Druggists' Association celebrated I-Day with Ghishulal Jain, president, exhorting members to contribute in building a healthy and prosperous country. S.K. Roshanlal Surana, vice-president, unfurled the flag.

    Indoor games

    T. Murthy, Deputy General Manager, Food Corporation of India, hoisted the flag at the State regional office here in the presence of staff and their families. Several indoor games were organised to mark the Independence Day.

    Vasanta Nageswara Rao, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative State Bank Ltd, unfurled the flag at the head office here. Recalling the sacrifices made by freedom fighters, he exhorted the staff to work for the uplift of farmers and the poor through the cooperatives.

    The State Bank of India celebrated Independence Day at its local head office in Koti here. Chief General Manager V.S.G. Chandra Sekhar, hoisting the flag, highlighted the achievements of the bank in all the spheres of banking. Staff members of SBI's Hyderabad main branch, NRI branches and other branches too participated in the function.

    The State Bank of Hyderabad celebrated the day at its head office in Gunfoundry with Managing Director Amitabh Guha unfurling the flag.

    At the Acharya NG Ranga Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, vice-chancellor S. Raghu Vardhan Reddy stressed upon the need to increase the agricultural growth rate by 4 per cent to maintain the overall economic growth rate of eight per cent at national level. The contribution of agriculture to the national GDP should 35 per cent, he said after hoisting the flag. Mr. Reddy also stated that a new biotechnology centre, water technology centre and a centre of excellence for quality assessment were being established at the varsity.

    The historic Arts College building was where Osmania University celebrated the event. Vice-chancellor Mohd. Suleman Siddiqi unfurled the flag after receiving a guard of honour presented by the security staff of the university. Mr. Siddiqi later hoisted the flag at the Faculty Club and the Non-Teaching Home.

    APCPDCL chairman and managing director G. Sai Prasad garlanded the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi and unfurled the tricolour to start the celebrations of the CPDCL at Mint Compound while K.S. Jawahar Reddy hoisted the flag at the head office of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board. Mr. Reddy later gave away awards to employees who were selected for the best performance award in the first quarter of the year.

    At the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad head office, Mayor Teegala Krishna Reddy hoisted the national flag. Commissioner Sanjay Jaju, deputy mayor Subash Chanderji and several corporators were present. The mayor later gave merit awards and certificates of appreciation to around 50 MCH officials, including additional commissioner (East) P. Anuradha, Sambasiva Rao (West), executive engineer MRK Murthy and medical officer M. Jayaram.
