Government offices, private organisations, educational institutions celebrate I-Day

VIJAYAWADA: Several Government offices, private organisations and educational institutions celebrated the 60th Independence Day on Tuesday.

City Mayor Tadi Sakuntala called upon people to contribute their might for the nation's development. She unfurled the national flag at the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation's (VMC) office here. She wanted elected representatives and officials of the VMC to work together and ensure transparency in the implementation of works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). Municipal Commissioner Natarajan Gulzar, Deputy Mayor Ch. Krishnakumar and others were present.

Vijayawada Sub-Collector Ch. Bhanu Prasad hoisted the national flag on the Sub-Collector's office premises and garlanded the portrait of Mahatma Gandhi.

Employees of different Government departments celebrated the occasion on the State Guesthouse premises. Project Director of the District Water Management Authority (DWMA) K. Sudhakar Reddy unfurled the tri-colour. Employees of the DWMA, Information and Public Relations, Minority Welfare and Sericulture departments were present.

Cases registered

Employees of the Labour Department celebrated Independence Day at their office. Assistant

Labour Commissioner J. Nageswara Rao underlined the need for strict implementation of labour laws. The officials registered cases against 171 shop owners, who failed to observe holiday on account of Independence Day.

Deputy General Manager of the Indian Bank A. Ramachandra Rao hoisted the national flag at the bank's circle office at Labbipet. Former MLA and CPI State committee member K. Subba Raju unfurled the national flag at the celebrations at Datti Kanaka Rao Memorial Library at Labbipet. Secretary of the library P. Poorneswara Rao and others were present.

Stamps, coins expo

Indira Enclave Owners Welfare Association arranged a stamps and coins exhibition on its premises in Ayodhya Nagar to mark the celebrations. Secretary of the association M. Saratchandra inaugurated the exhibition. In-charge of the Communist Party of India (CPI) city unit P. Surya Rao hoisted the tri-colour at Gandhi statue centre in Giripuram. Marking the Independence Day, president of the Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry Gaddam Subba Rao unfurled the national flag at the chamber's office in Gandhi Nagar. Principal of the SRR & CVR Government Degree College R.B. Deekshitulu hoisted the tri-colour on the college premises. Associate NCC officer Illa Ravi and others were present.
