VIJAYAWADA: City Police Commissioner Umesh Sharraf on Tuesday wanted the police to work in close coordination with people and ensure their safety and security. Addressing police personnel after unfurling the national flag at the Armed Reserve Grounds here on the occasion of Independence Day, Mr. Sharraf said though the country was making rapid strides in terms of overall development, threats from terrorist groups were posing a challenge to both internal and external security of the country. "Ours is a young nation. Though there are confrontations over issues like social equity, justice and equal opportunities to all sections of society, there is no dispute that the country is on the path of development," he said.
Cultural programmes
Mr. Sharraf said it was the need of the hour that the police played a key role to keep the law and order situation under control, as certain forces threatened to unleash violence in the country. "The objective of these forces is to create panic among people. It is the duty of the police to remove fears among people about their safety and security," he said, advising the police personnel to win the minds and hearts of people by discharging their duties perfectly. Students of several schools performed cultural programmes. Deputy Commissioner of Police U.V.S. Raju and others were present.
