HYDERABAD: Alleged harassment by in-laws for additional dowry drove a woman to kill her four-month-old daughter before ending her life at Masab Tank on Tuesday, the Humayunnagar police said. The victim G. Laxmi, 20, was alone in the house at Mahatma Gandhi Nagar after her husband Srinivas and in-laws went out on some work in the morning. Around noon, Srinivas' nephew Raju returned home and found Laxmi's body hanging from the ceiling. On learning about the incident, the Humayunangar Sub-Inspector K.S. Ravi went to the house, broke open the doors and saw Laxmi's daughter battling for life with knife injuries on her head.
Knife injuries
"It is apparent that Laxmi inflicted knife injuries on the baby girl before committing suicide," Mr. Ravi said. The baby was rushed to Niloufer hospital where she died while undergoing treatment. A resident of Rayakode in Medak district, Laxmi got married to Srinivas some 18 months ago. Her father Anjaiah alleged that his daughter resorted to the extreme step due to the dowry harassment by Srinivas and his family members. Based on his complaint, the police said they have decided to register a case under section 304-B (dowry harassment) of IPC against Srinivas.
