Srisailam water outflow reaches 7 lakh cusecs

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The outflow of water from Srisailam dam on Tuesday reached 7 lakh cusecs, the highest in the last two decades.

As a precaution, engineers maintained the same level of discharge from Nagarjunasagar and Prakasam Barrage to allow an unbridled flow into the river. Y. Abdul Basheer, chief engineer, Srisailam, told The Hindu here that the inflow to the dam was expected to reach 8 lakh cusecs in 14 hours from 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

The sudden increase was due to heavy inflow from Tungabhadra (1.89 lakh cusecs) adding to the incoming flood from upper reaches of the Krishna. The river was in spate around this time last year too but the outflow at all the projects did not exceed 5.5 lakh cusecs.

The outflow flooded several low-lying villages of Guntur, Krishna and Nalgonda districts and brought vast cropped lands under a sheet of water. Collectors of these districts have been asked to evacuate people from the villages located on still higher planes.
