Coimbatore: Distribution of welfare aid to the poor and needy, meritorious service awards to Government employees and non-Governmental organisations (NGOs) and honouring of freedom fighters marked the 60th Independence Day celebrations at the VOC Pak ground here on Tuesday. The Collector, Neeraj Mittal, unfurled the national tri-colour and reviewed a ceremonial parade by police personnel, Home Guards and NCC cadets amid tight security. The Collector released doves as a mark of promoting peace while the participants added colour to the occasion by releasing colourful balloons. The day passed off peacefully with no untoward incident being reported from any part of the district. Unprecedented security cover was provided in and around the VOC Park and across the city. Police personnel with binoculars stood vigil on high-rise buildings. The Inspector-General of Police, West Zone, A. Subramanian, Deputy-Inspector General of Police, Coimbatore Range, M.N. Manjunatha, Deputy Commissioners of Police, K. Shanmugavel (Law and Order), P.C. Thenmozhi (Crime), Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore, A.T. Duraikumar, DIG of Prisons, P. Munivelu, Superintendent of Prisons, S. Rajendran and many other officials took part. Welfare assistance of Rs.34.39 lakhs from Public Health, Medicine and Rural Welfare, Rural Development, Social Welfare, Small Savings, Tamil Nadu Adi-Dravidar Housing Development Corporation, Ex-Servicemen Welfare and Adi-dravidar welfare were provided to 154 beneficiaries. The assistance included district relief, old age pension, aid to the physically handicapped and widows.
Cultural events by 744 students from 13 institutions, for nearly an hour, enthralled the audience.
Gram sabha
The Collector took part in a gram sabha meeting held at Somaypalayam village in Periyanaickenpalayam panchayat union. Eradication of child labour, streamlining of drinking water supply, enrolment of children below 14 years into schools, clean upkeep of the village and a number of other resolutions were passed at the meeting. The Collector exhorted the villagers to check the list of below poverty line families displayed at panchayat offices to ensure that no family is left out. The Collector later took part in a "sama bandhi" programme held at the Arulmigu Marudhamalai Subramaniaswamy Temple. The Principal District Sessions Judge, S.F. Akbar hoisted the national flag at the District Court Complex. Later, along with the Bar Association president, N. Sundaravadivelu, the judge inaugurated a two-wheeler stand on the court premises.
Students hold rally
In Tirupur students of various municipal schools took out a rally from Municipal Office to Kumaran Statue here to mark the Independence Day on Tuesday. Municipal chairman M.N. Palanisamy unfurled the Tricolour at the municipal office and later garlanded the statues of Mahatma Gandhi and freedom fighter Tirupur Kumaran. Revenue Divisional Officer V. Kandhavel hoisted the national flag at the RDO office. Independence Day was celebrated at all the government offices, schools and in many private exporting houses. Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan received memento and award for collecting the Flag Day fund exceeding the target given by the chairman of Tamil Nadu Flag Day and the State Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala for consecutive years.
