KOCHI: Parades, hoisting of national flags and public meetings marked the Independence Day celebrations in the district on Tuesday. The Navy called off its Independence Day parade due to heavy rain, said its public relations officer of the navy. In his Independence Day address, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma called for united fight against religious fundamentalists for protecting the integrity of the country. Independence Day should be viewed as an occasion to re-dedicate oneself to a transparent and corruption-free administrative system, Mr. Sarma said. Mr. Sarma hoisted the national flag on the St. Albert's College ground, Kaloor, and took the salute. The police, NCC, Scouts and Guides, junior Red Cross, Bulbuls, Cubs and bands attended the parade. The Kochi City Armed Police, the Navy and the NCC senior division won the awards for the parade in the armed category. The other prize winners in various categories are: NCC Army wing junior division girls, Scouts of CCPLM High School, Guides of Government Girls High School, Ernakulam, junior Red Cross of CCPLM High School, Government Girls High School, Ernakulam, and St. Mary's High School, Ernakulam, Bulbuls of St. Teresa's Lower Primary School, Ernakulam, Thattazham LPS, Vaduthala, and Chatyath LMCC LPS, cubs of Thattazham LPS, Chatyath LMCC LPS, St. Mary's LPS, Band of St. Antony's HSS, Kacheripady, CCPLM HS and St. Teresa's HSS, Ernakulam. Mr. Sarma also presented medals to personnel who were selected for the police medal. K. Babu, MLA, A.P.M. Muhammad Hanish, Collector, M. Vahab, Rural SP, C.P. Ramachandran Nair, ADM, and Mini Antony, RDO, attended.
Celebrations at port trust
N. Ramachandran, chairman, Cochin Port Trust, hoisted the national flag in the K.K. Premachandran Sports Complex on Wellingdon Island. He also inspected the parade of the Central Industrial Security Force. Various organisations including residents' associations and social organisations also organised Independence Day programmes. A Correspondent writes from Nedumbassery: Independence Day was celebrated at the Cochin International Airport. Sheela Thomas, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, who is holding temporary charge as the managing director of the airport company hoisted the tricolour in the morning. This was followed by a parade by the contingents of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the fire wing of the Kochi airport. Ms. Sheela Thomas took the salute. Airport Director A.C.K. Nair, CISF Commandant K.C. Suresh Kumar, emigration and customs officials, CIAL officials and airline representatives were present.
