Kerala
Drinking water scarcity is an unresolved problem in west Kochi, even after the recent commissioning of a storage tank. The water supply system is unsatisfactory. Most of the supply lines in the constituency are rusty, outdated and damaged, resulting in enormous wastage of precious drinking water. But the authorities are turning a blind eye to the issue. The supply timings have been rescheduled. Accordingly in thickly populated areas such as Cherlai, at times, the supply commences only at 6 a.m. and ends by 8 a.m. while in the evenings it is done between 7 p.m. and 8-9 p.m. For many, the earlier timings were convenient. It is strange that councillors do not bother to take the responsibility for solving the problem. Hope, the Water Resources Minister will look into the issue. H. Ravikumar Pai, Kochi Plight of bus passengers The misery of passengers travelling in private buses, especially senior citizens and women, is worsening. Travelling in these buses has become a nightmare, to say the least. The height of the footboard in a majority of buses is more than the prescribed limit, causing hardship to the elderly. Worse still, drivers move the vehicle even before passengers take their seats or stand conveniently. Such haste is fraught with obvious risks to the passenger. The behaviour of conductors towards passengers leaves much to be desired. Overloading and speeding have become the rule rather than an exception. The situation in the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses is no better. It is high time the authorities took note of the plight of passengers. K.
