KOCHI: The Centre for Public Policy Research, a city-based research organisation, has launched a campaign against the proposed amendments to the Right To Information (RTI) Act. The Act, which provides citizens the right to gain information on virtually everything related to public authorities, was enacted on October 2005 and was being implemented at the national and State level. Amendments being made at this point would affect the very purpose and good intentions of the Act, said members of the Centre. The Centre will organise a series of talks in different colleges in the State to make the students and public aware of the consequences of the move.
Signature campaign
A signature campaign will also be launched on a memorandum to be submitted to the authorities, a press release issued by the Centre said. The campaign was launched on Monday with a talk by Sreelal Warrier, lawyer, Kerala High Court, at Sacred Heart College, Thevara. He said the bureaucrats were trying to sabotage the Act. Though the amendments can be challenged in the Supreme Court, only a public campaign can stop the move. The Centre will organise another talk on `Right to information Act and the proposed Amendments' at Maharaja's College on August 17.
