NEW DELHI: Each of the 50 special commandos of the Delhi police who formed the inner circle of the security cordon at the historic Red Fort for the Independence Day celebrations here on Tuesday morning had fired over 1,000 rounds of munitions from their AK-47 assault rifles to hone their skills during a special eight-day rigorous training camp held at the National Security Guard training centre at Manesar in Haryana a couple of weeks ago.

During the training camp, these commandos also underwent special obstacle and physical training to thwart any untoward incident during their deployment on Independence Day. In fact, after the function at the Red Fort, these personnel were despatched to Rashtrapati Bhavan for the President's "at home" in the evening. Refusing to divulge their names, they said they were told to remain extra-vigilant this year due to the heightened threat perception. Though they receive training round the year, the special eight-day course was designed to secure VVIPs and thwart any attempt to disrupt the Independence Day celebrations. Disclosing that their group of 50 commandos, who were carrying over 10,000 rounds of ammunition at the Red Fort, is deployed for the security of the President, the PM, former Prime Ministers and visiting dignitaries
