This Day That Age
The President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, has characterised as "a stroke of genius" the solution found by Members of Parliament "for the most difficult and the most knotty problem" of Bombay. Replying to a civic reception accorded to him in Madras on August 15, he said the solution was acceptable to the whole of Parliament and to the Government. "Although it has not given satisfaction to all, and there is some trouble in Gujarat, I have confidence in the good sense of our people, and I have no doubt that the whole thing will be settled without any further serious trouble." Emphasising the need for maintaining unity and preserving the hard-won freedom, the President warned that "nothing can be tolerated and nothing should be tolerated which in any way jeopardises that unity." He pleaded for public co-operation for implementing the various schemes undertaken by the Government and said the Indian people were "cautious and not conservative," and once they were convinced that a thing was for their good they would do anything for implementing it. The President thanked the citizens of Madras "for the great welcome" extended to him since his arrival in the city three days ago.
