CHENNAI: Though there are many steps in the path of righteousness to give a fillip to one's spiritual pursuit, individuals get steeped in worldly objects and do not explore these. It is not easy to rid oneself of the illusory effect of this worldly life, though one knows it to be transient and full of sorrow. The origin and source of all Dharmas and Sastras are the Vedas and there is nothing that is not found in them. But it is not easy for many to read and understand the Vedas though it is stated that he who reads the Vedas gets liberated. Moreover the Vedas are not accessible to all and not all are authorised to read them. The Bhagavata Purana contains the essence of all Sastras and Dharmas found in the Vedas and hence is considered equal to the Vedas, if not a cut above, said Sri K. V. Seshadrinatha Sastrigal in a lecture. Moreover, the Vedas and Puranas differ in the manner they represent dharma. The Vedas prescribe orders without giving any reason, while the Puranas teach the same dharma in a friendly way. It was out of compassion for all Jivatmas that Sage Vyasa was inspired to compose the Bhagavata Purana so that the path to salvation became clear to the people of Kali Yuga. The course of evolution of the Yugas reveals a shift in the qualifying requisites of an individual aiming for salvation. People of Krita Yuga attained liberation through meditation (Dhyana), while in Treta Yuga and Dwapara Yuga the paths lay in penance (Yaga and Yagna) and worship (Archana) respectively. In Kali Yuga devotion through Nama Sankirtana (chanting the names of the Lord) is stated to be the only means for attainment of liberation. The essence of Bhagavata Dharma highlights the efficacy of Bhakti that leads one to the divine presence. It offers the promise of liberation for all Jivatmas regardless of status, birth, learning, etc, the only requirement being sincere and genuine Bhakti to the Lord. The prime purpose is to extol the glory of the Lord and the people who listen to the narratives undergo an inner transformation to long for union with the compassionate Lord and thereby attain the purpose of life. The incarnation of Lord Krishna is described in great detail to enable people to develop genuine devotion to Him.
