Funds shortage may hit C-DAC projects

Param supercomputing facility in Pune "badly in need" of replacement

NEW DELHI: Funds shortage is likely to affect India's attempt to reverse the serious shortage of supercomputing resources.

Deposing before a Parliamentary panel, Ministry of Information Technology officers said the cut in allocation to the Centre for Development of Advance Computing (C-DAC) for the current fiscal would lead to the "curtailment" of some new activities.

The C-DAC has envisioned compelling needs to provision for migrating to the `Garuda' national grid computing initiative, infrastructure development and augmentation as quickly as possible because the National Param supercomputing facility in Pune has already served its life and is "badly in need" of replacement.

The C-DAC has embarked on proof of concept phase for the Garuda grid project.

Grid computing will enable a set of institutions attempting to solve a grand challenge problem such as weather prediction, drug discovery or disaster management.
