As Onam approaches, more avenues for shopping are opening up in the city. Exhibitions provide a good opportunity for shoppers. The national handicrafts exhibition now on at the Marine Drive has on display articles of everyday use and curios, dress materials, carpets, food items and footwear. The sheer variety of saris at the exhibition provides a delightful experience to discerning customers. Saris from such as the kantha saris made at Shantiniketan in Kolkatta, silk saris from Jharkhand and ikkat saris from Orissa area available in various hues. Fabrics from Pochampalli and Mangalagiri are other attractions. The kantha saris cost a few thousands rupees. The exquisitely embroidered ones are priced at Rs.1 lakh. The designs on each sari are embroidered by a single person to ensure uniformity in style, says a salesman at the stall selling kantha saris. A wide variety of leather bags, stone-studded bangles from Agra, condiments from Rajasthan, carpets from Uttar Pradesh, flower vases, sofa sets, bags, refrigerator covers and toys are showcased at the fair.
