GULBARGA: The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday launched an indefinite dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here demanding immediate allotment of house sites and houses for the poor. Hundreds of women came in a procession from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Chowk to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum to the district administration before beginning their indefinite dharna. The memorandum said it was the social responsibility of the Government to provide a house or house site to poor people. The memorandum pointed out that slum-dwellers, domestic helpers, construction workers and vegetable vendors had submitted individual applications to the district administration seeking houses and house sites in November last year.
Unfulfilled promises
Though more than one year had lapsed after submitting these applications, the district administration was yet to take measures to allot houses and house sites to these people. The indefinite dharna launched by the party in March last year was called off after the district administration assured that poor people would be either allotted houses under different schemes or house sites. Based on these assurances, 2,200 applications were filed with the authorities seeking houses and house sites, but to no avail. The protesters also wanted 24-hour water supply to all localities of the Gulbarga city instead of limiting it to 11 wards.
