Jagdish stars in Gujarat's win

CHENNAI: Left-arm spinner Jagdish Patel's match haul of eight for 80 helped Gujarat defeat TNCA President's XI by 94 runs in the first round of the Mindteck-Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament at the SRMC Turf grounds here on Wednesday.

Chasing Gujarat's first innings score of 336, TNCA was dismissed for 274 in 80 overs. Jagdish was the pick of the bowlers with figures of six for 67. After having secured a 62-run first innings lead Gujarat was dismissed for 141 in its second innings. Opener Akash Christian continued his good form and scored his second half-century of the match. R. Ram Kumar and Ganapathy claimed three wickets apiece.

Chasing a victory target of 204, TNCA lost wickets at regular intervals and was bundled out for 109. Kirat Dhamani took three for 12. Gujarat secured eight points.

Easy for Andhra

At ICL-Gurunanak, Andhra scored an easy eight-wicket win against Mumbai Colts. Mumbai Colts was bowled out for 85 in the second innings. Mumbai Colts made a poor start losing three wickets with just eight runs on the board. But Abhijit Shetye and first innings century maker, Bhavin Thakkar steadied the innings adding 58 off 117 balls for the fourth wicket. Mumbai Colts's innings collapsed thereafter as it lost the remaining wickets for just 19 runs. Left-arm spinner Lakshman Kishore returned figures of three for 17.

Andhra, which had a 15 run first innings lead, needed 71 to secure victory and romped home in 20 overs. Andhra got eight points for its victory.

At Mayajaal, Combined Districts cruised to an eight-wicket win over Maharashtra. Set a victory target of 104, Combined Districts was 25 for no loss at stumps on Tuesday and it took only one-hour and 15 minutes for Combined Districts to seal victory and with it eight points on the final day. R. Srinivasan and R. Satish guided the team home, with an unbeaten 41 run third-wicket stand.

Kerala gains lead

At Viveka, Mohammed Aslam's seven-wicket haul could not prevent Kerala XI from taking a first innings lead against Rajasthan. The match started only after lunch for the third consecutive day due to overnight showers. Kerala continued its first innings and made 238 for eight in 87 overs. Play was called off once Kerala took the lead. C.M. Tejas made an unbeaten 46 and added 52 with Anil Kumar for the eighth wicket. Kerala collected five points on the basis of first innings lead, while Rajasthan was awarded two points.

At ICL-Gurunanak: Mumbai Colts 272 and 85 in 36 overs lost to Andhra 287 for nine and 74 for two in 20 overs. Andhra: 8, Mumbai Colts: 0

At Mayajaal: Maharashtra 118 and 133 lost to Combined Districts 148 and 104 for two in 28.3 overs. Combined Districts: 8, Maharashtra: 0

At Viveka: Rajasthan 237 drew with Kerala XI 238 for eight in 87 overs (C.M. Tejas 46 n.o., Mohammed Aslam seven for 64). Kerala: 5, Rajasthan: 2
