`India will not kneel'

On the Independence Day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the nation: "No one can make India kneel." He spoke from a bullet proof enclosure, amidst swarming security personnel in and around Red Fort with all roads leading to the fort cordoned off, sniffer dogs in attendance, marksmen positioned on rooftops, airspace closed and the aam aadmi in the vicinity ordered not to move. Is this the independence we dreamt of? Have we not knelt already?

The Prime Minister struck the right note in his reference to terrorism. He called for an immediate end to cross-border terrorism while stressing forcefully that no effort will be spared to ensure that terrorist elements in India are neutralised and smashed. He clearly pointed to the fact that the blame for terrorist acts cannot be laid solely at the doors of Pakistan and that India too has to look within.

The problems facing India today are population explosion, poverty, illiteracy, religious fundamentalism, poor infrastructure and corruption. Thousands of poor farmers commit suicide and the minorities live in constant fear. Corruption has become a way of life leading to poor infrastructure, poor regulations, and day-to-day hassles for the common man. Instead of making India a land of skyscrapers and software corporations, the Government should focus on vital issues.
