GOOD SHOW: Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha handing over `Godavari Scholarship' to a girl from Rapthadu at Anantapur on Wednesday.
ANANTAPUR: Zilla Parishad Chairperson T. Kavitha has suggested the parents of girls in rural areas should encourage their daughters in pursuing education, as educated women could make a better society by improving living standards of their families. Speaking at a function organised here on Wednesday by Godavari Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited for disbursing the first instalment of scholarship amount given under "Godavari Rural School Girls Pratibha Puraskar", she complimented the organisation for its contribution in social service. She also praised the girls for their academic excellence in spite of poor facilities in Government schools. They could easily outshine students of corporate schools if provided facilities on a par with them. General Manager (marketing) of the fertiliser company G.V. Subba Reddy stated that 61 girls who stood first and second in the 2005-06 ninth standard examination in 30 schools of the district were selected for the scholarship this year. It would enable them to continue tenth standard without financial problems, he said. As the first instalment, girls who stood first were given Rs. 1,500 each and those who stood second Rs. 1,000 each. They would be given another Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 each respectively, in January 2007.
Poor families
The scholarship was instituted to enable the talented girls from poor families in rural areas to continue their education. The scholarship scheme was extended to 13 districts this year. Last year, 100 girls from 50 schools were given scholarships of Rs. 3,000 and Rs. 2,000, respectively. Chief Executive Officer of ZP K. Sripathi Rao said the scheme was improving competitiveness among the girls. Assistant Director of Agriculture Jonathan said the fertiliser company had also agreed to give a cash prize to the best `Polam Badi' this year. District Education Officer P. Krishnamachari also spoke.
