Pondicherry: Pondicherry Pradesh Congress Committee president P. Shanmugham recalled the `amazing development' Pondicherry has made since its merger de jure with the Indian Union in 1962. Mr. Shanmugham told The Hindu at the party office on the occasion of the celebration of the 44th De Jure Transfer Day (Liberation Day of Pondicherry) at the party office here on Wednesday that Pondicherry had made rapid progress on all fronts.

Development of infrastructure, education, agriculture and rise in literacy had been so impressive that the implementation of various plans and programmes by the Government here had earned the encomiums of the Planning Commission. He recalled the services rendered by veteran leaders and freedom fighters for the liberation of Pondicherry and said that their dreams of making Pondicherry the numero uno State were being achieved fast through progressive steps taken by the governments that had held reins of power in the past and also by the present administration.The Residents Welfare Association in Solai Nagar in Muthialpet block celebrated the De Jure Transfer day by distribution of sweets to all those present at the function held at the residential colony. The president of the association, R. Shanmugasundaram, hoisted the national flag. All government offices and institutions remained closed on Wednesday as a holiday was declared for the offices as a mark of celebration of the `De Jure Transfer day'
