NEW DELHI : With a discussion on the India-U.S. civilian nuclear agreement scheduled for Thursday in the Rajya Sabha, leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party have asserted that they would continue to press for a sense of the House resolution on the subject. A meeting to fine-tune the party's position and finalise a strategy for this was held here on Wednesday at the residence of the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The BJP's concerns have already been expressed several times through statements. The focus of this concern is related to India continuing to maintain a "credible nuclear deterrence," not giving up its right to carry on with nuclear research for strategic requirements, and pressing that it be treated on par with other nuclear powers. Some party leaders have disclosed that the BJP's continued demand for a "sense of the House resolution" even after a decision that the subject will be discussed in Parliament and the Prime Minister will respond and there will be no resolution stems from the hope that the BJP would be able to help put the focus on the sharp differences between the Government and the Left on the yet-to-be negotiated deal.
