KOLKATA: The ruling Left Front in West Bengal has demanded an inquiry into the campus violence in the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU) in Shibpur, Howrah, last week resulting in the death of a third year student.Several academic institutions across the State were closed on Monday following a strike called by the Students Federation of India in protest against the violence. Those responsible for the events leading to the student's death should be given exemplary punishment, chairman of the Left Front Committee Biman Bose said here on Wednesday. Mr. Bose, also a CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, said the incident was reminiscent ofthe death of a student of the same institution during the naxalite movement in 1971. He urged students to exercise restraint in the face of provocations by student groups.
