Comprehensive insurance scheme sought for conservancy workers

Special Correspondent

Premium for the cover should be fully borne by Government, says M. Ramadoss "A Welfare Board should also be set up for their benefit"

Pondicherry: The Patali Makkal Katchi Parliamentary Party leader, M. Ramadoss, has called upon the Centre to introduce a national insurance scheme to cover the conservancy workers all over the country.

In a release here on Wednesday, he said that the conservancy workers coming under unorganised labour sector were engaged in removing solid waste, clean drains and remove garbage. They were also engaged in the maintaining cleanliness of cities and their neighbouring pockets. The predicament of these workers was, however, causing concern.

The Government should introduce a comprehensive insurance scheme to benefit these workers.

As their economic condition was very poor, the payment of premium for the insurance cover should be fully borne by the Government, as social security for the workers would be helpful. Mr. Ramadoss said that the United Progressive Alliance Government had been distinguishing itself by implementing various welfare schemes such as the National Rural Health Mission for the improving the lot of the helpless and weaker sections of society. Hence, the insurance policy should be evolved soon and extended to these workers without delay. A nation wide survey should be taken up to gather statistics of the total number of conservancy workers across the country.

A Welfare Board should also be set up for their benefit, he noted. Mr. Ramadoss said he had highlighted these points while participating in a discussion on a private Member's Bill in Parliament on Monday last.
