Pondicherry: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy distributed gift packets to freedom fighters at a marriage hall in Muthialpet near here on Wednesday to mark the celebration of the 44th De Jure Transfer [of power] Day (Liberation Day) of Pondicherry. Welfare Minister P. Angalane, president of the Forum of Freedom Fighters A. Arulraj, its secretary M. Periyasamy and the Communist Party of India legislator R. Viswanathan were among those present. The Freedom Fighters Cell of Pondicherry Government had been holding functions every year in collaboration with the Directorate of Information and Publicity to greet freedom fighters on the occasion of the Liberation Day of Pondicherry on August 16. The Cell is paying a pension of Rs.3,000 per month to each freedom fighter from the State Exchequer. A total of 2,387 freedom fighters are covered under the scheme in the Union Territory. The Government spent Rs. 7.36 lakh on distribution of towels, blankets and other garments this year to the freedom fighters, of whom women also were present. Pondicherry became free de facto on November 1954 and de jure transfer of power followed this on August 16, 1962. J. Narayanasamy, MLA (Independent), led a team of volunteers to address a meeting at the Kizhoor village in Villianoor commune panchayat limits near here to mark the celebration of the Liberation Day.
