MADURAI: Chennai retained both the boys' and girls' team titles in the Vaigai Tamil Nadu State junior inter-district badminton championship organised by Madurai District Badminton Association and S.D.A.T. Temple City Badminton Academy at the MGR Race Course indoor stadium here on Wednesday. In the boys' section left-hander Prakash Raja, executing fine smashes and drops, beat V. Sathya Narayan Rao 23-21 to give Madurai the lead. But V. Sathya Narayan Rao, partnering M.R. Mani Kandan got the better of Prakash Raja and J. Nishanth 21-14, 21-13 in the doubles to level the score 1-1. In the second singles Mani Kandan, who excelled in short service and drops beat Nishanth 21-10, 21-12 to give victory for Chennai. The results (Final): Chennai bt Madurai 2-1 (V. Sathyanarayana Rao lost to Prakash Raja 21-23, 21-13, 11-21; V. Sathyanarayan Rao/ M.R. Manikandan bt Prakash Raja/ J. Nishanth 21-14, 21-13; M.R. Manikandan bt J. Nishanth 21-10, 21-12). Semifinals: Madurai bt Salem 2-1; Chennai bt Coimbatore 2-0. Girls (Final): Chennai bt Coimbatore 2-0 (Amrin Mubarak bt B. Akila Devi 21-18, 21-14; Amrin Mubarak/ Suneri bt V. Lakshmi Priya/ Ramaprabha 15-21, 21-17, 21-15. Semifinals: Chennai bt Ramanathapuram 2-0; Coimbatore bt Madurai 2-0.
Inter-district U-19 cricket
The TNCA inter-district under-19 cricket tournament will get underway simultaneously at 7 centres Theni (Zone A), Salem (Zone B), Cuddalore (Zone C), Coimbatore (Zone D), Nagapattinam (Zone E), Dindigul (Zone F), and Namakkal (Zone G) on Friday (August 18). The teams: Zone A: Theni, Thiruvallur, Dharamapuri, Nilgiris and Erode. Zone B: Salem, Thiruvarur, Karur and Sivagangai. Zone C: Cuddalore, Trichy, Villupuram and Virudhunagar. Zone D: Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Madurai and Krishnagiri. Zone E: Nagapattinam, Kanchipuram, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram. Zone F: Dindigul, Pondicherry, Kanyakumari and Pudukottai. Zone G: Namakkal, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Tuticorin and Perambalur.
U-19 handball team trials
Trials to select the Tamil Nadu State boys under-19 handball team to participate in the National championship to be held at Baruni (Bihar) will be held at S.M.B.M.M. Higher Secondary School ground, Dindigul, at 9 a.m. on August 19. Twenty probables will be selected first and they will be in a coaching camp for a week in Dindigul and the final team of 12 will be announced on August 27, before the departure of the team to Baruni. Xavier shines
An unbeaten 57 by Xavier helped Dharangdharh Chemical Works (Sahupuram) defeat Kayal CC by 53 runs and enter the semifinals of the 17th annual L.P. Rayen Memorial Trophy cricket tournament at Tuticorin on Wednesday. The scores (quarterfinals): DCW 172 for eight in 30 overs (Raj 45, Xavier 57 n.o) bt Kayal CC 119 in 24.2 overs; SPIC Central Sports Council 132 in 26.4 overs (Narasimhan four for 28) bt Pusco CC 66 in 16.1 overs.
