Rated players at the receiving end

BANGALORE: It was a dramatic start to the FIDE-rated State chess championship at the Malleswaram Association here on Wednesday, with as many as six rated players tasting defeat in the opening round.

Nambiar (2171), Sushruta Reddy (2018), N.R. Raghuraman (1973), R. Hanumantha (1963) H.S. Karthik (1912) and N. Madhuri (1624) were the rated players who were at the receiving end. They lost to Anil Anand, Bharat, Chetan Kashyap, N.K. Harish, Kiran Kishore and B.M. Manjunath respectively.

Other rated players including N. Sanjay, M.S. Thejkumar, Aravind Shastry and Sriram Sarja won on the top tables.

The eight-year-old M. Satvik, who won a bronze medal in under 8 Asian Championship in Teheran recently, was felicitated during the inauguration.

Prabhakar, President of the Malleswaram Association inaugurated the championship.

Bangalore Mars in last four

Bangalore Mars entered the semifinal league of the `C' division football championship when it beat Queen Star 3-2 here on Wednesday. After Queen Star took the lead with Rukma's 15th minute goal, Bangalore Mars struck thrice in the second session through Balu (48th), Dominic (54th) and Vinod (62nd). Rukma again netted for Queen Star in the 65th minute.

Along with Bangalore Mars, Universal FC also had qualified for the semifinal league.

Ram Rustagi triumphs

Ram Rustagi with a score of 43 points bagged the Independence Day trophy in the golf tournament conducted at the Karnataka Golf Association here on Aug 14 and 15. Syed Saqib Ahmed (42pts) finished runner-up.

In the Open Event section, Jaibir Singh took the title while Arjun Lall clinched the second spot by a toss of coin after a tie on points.

In the ladies event, Megha Verma (35pts) was the winner while Dhanalakshmi Rice (34 pts) finished runner-up.

The tournament was played on a Stableford format.

Viswanath claims title

N. Viswanath of Infosys Health Club claimed the Sri Rana Byregowda 2006 title in a State-level body building competition, organised by The Rocks & Hot Shot Association, at the KEB Community Hall, Rajajinagar here.

Nearly 70 body builders took part in the competition.

The results: Short Class: 1. R. Shivkumar (Hercules), 2. K.V. Ravichandra (Add Plus), 3. S. Rajesh (Fitness World). Medium Class: 1. N. Viswanath (Infosys HC), 2. Raghavendra Shetty (Muscle Gang), 3. Reejith (Perfect Gym). Tall Class: 1. M. Raghavendra (Hercules), 2. Shyamsundar (Rambo, Mandya), 3. Nanjan Gowda (Fitness Square).

Super Tall Class: R. Nataraj (Raju's Gym), 2. Rakesh Nag (Iron Clut), 3. B.S. Vinayaka (Gold's Gym).
