Well-deserved award for Kannur tourism council

Staff Reporter

It popularised several lesser-known spots

KANNUR: The selection of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) here for the State Government award is seen as a rightly deserved recognition for its initiatives over the last few years.

Many a lesser-known tourism spot and potential destinations here have been brought into the limelight, thanks to the DTPC. Kannur Mahotsavam, which showcases the cultural legacy of the district, earned it kudos from various quarters.

The council initiated various tourism-related activities during the rule of the United Democratic Front. At a recent function here, Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, while announcing that the DTPCs would be reconstituted on the basis of their performance, singled out the Kannur council for its good performance.

DTPC secretary P.C. Raveendran said the credit for the good show should go to previous District Collector and DTPC chairman K.S. Sreenivas. The co-operation from political leaders and organisations here helped the DTPC perform effectively over the last few years, he added.

Major schemes conceived under the initiative of the DTPC include the Paithalmala and Kanhirakolli tourism projects. The renovation of the Gandhi Maidanam and development of the Salt Satyagraha Park at Payyannur and Meenkunnu beach development were among the projects the DTPC took up in the recent past. The DTPC was actively involved in organising college-level tourism clubs and the formation of a Kudumbasree unit to clean the beaches. The setting up of the Arakkal Palace Museum here by the Tourism Department is also another major project for which the DTPC can claim credit.

DTPC officials here are looking forward to a busy schedule in the coming days as major projects are in the pipeline. These include the development of the Town square and the three major beaches here.
