Tourism project for Thiruvambadi

Staff Reporter

Aims to connect spots of natural beauty

KOZHIKODE: A comprehensive tourism project is being formulated for developing a tourist corridor that would connect the popular and less known picnic spots in the Thiruvambadi Assembly constituency in the district. A sum of Rs.5 lakh has been provided in the Budget for formulating the project that has been envisaged basically for providing `an ideal day out for the family.'

Speaking to The Hindu here on Wednesday Mathai Chacko, MLA, who has envisaged the tourism package as part of his election manifesto, said the waterfalls in the area, besides the spots of natural beauty, would be connected to provide a whole day tour of the region.

The sites to be covered would include Anakampoyil, Aripara, Medapara, Kozhipara, besides the Thusharagiri waterfalls, which was already a much sought-after tourist destination in the district. The tourist corridor would be developed with least damage to the environment.

"It is a total scheme that covers a number of beautiful spots in the Western Ghat region, many of which are surrounded by forests, and can be visited in a day. The corridor would start from the hairpin bend to Thusharagiri, Jeerakapara, Aripara, Poovaranthodu, Vellarimala, and so on.

"The amenities planned include safety precautions to avoid accidents, especially at the waterfalls," Mr. Chacko said.

The Thiruvananthapuram-based Habitat is the agency that would implement the project. Private participation would also be considered.

G. Shankar of Habitat said the Central and State Government, Department of Tourism, and the local self-government institutions would be the stakeholders in the project.
