SYDNEY: Travis Dodd scored one goal and created another as Australia qualified for the Asian Cup football finals with a 2-0 win over Kuwait on Wednesday, its first outing since a second-round World Cup defeat to eventual champion Italy. With qualifying Group D depleted after Lebanon's withdrawal, the win was enough to secure Australia the first of 16 berths at the Asian Cup finals next July. The Socceroos squad looked nothing like the one that received high accolades at the World Cup before going out on a last-minute penalty goal to the Italians. Master coach Guus Hiddink departed for Russia, leaving his former assistant Graham Arnold as interim manager of the Australia team. With his Europe-based stars unavailable, Arnold was forced to select from Australia's domestic A-League competition.
