Adviser to Home Minister

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to appoint the former Chief Secretary C. Ramachandran as adviser to Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told mediapersons after the Cabinet meeting that an advisor was being appointed on account of the workload of the Minister. The Home Minister had sought the assistance of an experienced hand to help him and the Cabinet had agreed to the same. — Special Correspondent

Condoled

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Governor R.L. Bhatia and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan have condoled the demise of K. Chandrasekharan.

The Governor said the eminent lawyer and able parliamentarian strove for the poor and the downtrodden. His contributions as a Minister and socialist leader would long be remembered, he added. The Chief Minister said that as a Minister, Chandrasekharan was able to leave his imprint on the revenue, law and educational sectors. His contributions as a Minister, public worker and lawyer would always be remembered. — Special Correspondent

Plea for more flights to Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has urged the Centre to operate more air services in the Gulf-Kerala sector during the Onam season. In a letter he sent to the Prime Minister on Wednesday Mr. Achuthanandan also called for withdrawing the hike ranging between Rs.2,500 and Rs.5,000 made in the airfares. He said that absence of adequate number of flights and the hike in airfares were creating a lot of difficulties to the Gulf Malayalis.

He has brought these problems to the attention of Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel also. — Special Correspondent

State photography awards announced

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Joshy Manjummel has won this year's State photography award. Sushaman Kadavil and Saji Kalamasseri came second and third. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan, who announced the awards, said that the awards carried Rs.10,001, Rs.5,001 and Rs.3,001 for the first, second and third places besides a plaque and certificate each. He also announced ten consolation prizes. The topic of this year's contest was rainy season in Kerala. The awards will be presented on August 19 at a function to be organised in connection with World Photography Day. — Special Correspondent

Christian leaders meet Shihab Thangal

MALAPPURAM: A group of Christian leaders held discussions with Indian Union Muslim League State president Syed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal at his Kodappanakkal house, near here, on Wednesday. The group included Thrissur Archbishop Mar Jacob Thumkuzhi and Thiruvalla Archbishop Isaac Mar Cleemis. The discussions were held in the presence of IUML State secretary T.A. Peechi dam may be opened

THRISSUR: Those who reside on the banks of the Manali and Karuvannur rivers and the Kanoli canal have been warned to remain cautious as the shutters of the Peechi dam could be opened anytime owing to a rise in the water level in the dam, according to the Executive Engineer, Irrigation Division. The shutters of the Chimminy dam were opened on Wednesday. — Staff Reporter

Former editor dead

PONNANI: K.V. Abdurahman, former editor of the Chandrika daily, died at his house here on Wednesday. The funeral will take place at Ponnani Juma Masjid at 12 noon on Thursday. — Staff Reporter

Tuberculosis control programme

KOZHIKODE: Mayor M. Bhaskaran inaugurated the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP) at the Aswini Diagnostic Services at Chinthavalappu here on Tuesday. The RNTCP is part of preventive measures being implemented across the country to combat the disease. — Staff Reporter

Priest dead

Kozhikode: Fr. George Thamarakkad, 96, who belonged to the Titilo Mission Order, died at his residence in Kozhikode on Wednesday. He has served in Assam and Bengal and also authored the book `Memoirs of a Missionary.' Fr. Thamarakkad was given special permission by then Pope to get married. - Special Correspondent
