KARIMNAGAR: The BJP senior leader and former Union Minister Ch. Vidyasagar Rao has asked the State Government to declare the Telangana Liberation Day on September 17 a State holiday and celebrate the day as a State festival in the Telangana region by hoisting the national flag. Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, the BJP demanded that the Congress and TRS legislators, who have been elected on Telangana sentiment, to raise the issue in the ensuing Assembly session and ensure that the Telangana liberation day was celebrated as State festival by declaring a holiday. He said that the BJP, which had raised the issue in 1998 by celebrating the Golden jubilee of Telangana liberation day, has been demanding the Government to celebrate the festival, but in vain. He said that the neighbouring Karnataka and Maharashtra States were celebrating the Telangana liberation day in their respective regions on September 17 by hoisting the tri-colour. He said that Telangana liberation day attained importance because the region was liberated from Nizam rulers only on September 17, 1948 after intervention by Union Government. The BJP leaders P Sugunakar Rao, B .Jaganmohan Rao were present.
