Bill on private varsities opposed

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Democratic Teachers' Federation has opposed the introduction of a Bill on private universities in the ensuing Assembly session. M. Gangadhar, general secretary, in a statement on Wednesday said if the Bill was passed, higher education would become expensive. He criticised the proposal saying it amounted to `privatisation of higher education' and `handing it over to MNCs.' - Special Correspondent

Teachers' plea

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union has urged the Government to secure orders from the President on local cadre organisation of Panchayat Raj teachers as a permanent solution to the problem of service rules. - Special Correspondent

Girl ends life

ADILABAD: T. Bindu a Class X student of Ramnagar Government High School committed suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday night. II Town Sub Inspector of Police P. Sambaiah said there was no reason ascribed for the suicide. - Staff Reporter

AIYF activist murdered

ANANTAPUR: An activist of All India Youth Federation (AIYF) S.M. Basha (33), who has a rowdy sheet against him, was done to death allegedly by his friends near a petrol filling station on Gooty Road here late on Tuesday night. According to the police the victim had a heated argument with K. Basha, Altaf and Ramana on Tuesday. The three then allegedly slit the throat of S.M. Basha and later hit his head with a boulder. - Staff Reporter

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee celebrated the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister K. Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy at Gandhi Bhavan on Wednesday. Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy's portrait was garlanded by C.V. Sesha Reddy, vice president of PCC, M. Kodanda Reddy, chairman of kisan cell, and N. Thulasi Reddy, spokesperson. - Special Correspondent

Gokulashtami at Tirumala

TIRUMALA: Gaiety marked the annual Gokulashtami festival at Lord Venkateswara temple. Special rituals like Snapana Thirumanjanam to Lord Ugra Srinivasa, Sri Devi and Bhoo Devi and Lord Krishna were conducted at Bangaru Vakili in the Garudalwar Sannidhi inside the main temple followed by the Asthanam. An extention to the festival -- `Utla Utsavam' - will be conducted on Thursday. - Staff Reporter

Enquiry conducted

CHITTOOR: The Cooperative Deputy Registrar who conducted an enquiry on malpractices committed in Chittoor Cooperative Town Bank by the ex-members of the governing body and Chief Executive Officers on Wednesday issued surcharge notices to them here requesting them to pay the amounts specified in the notices within a period of two months with 16 per cent interests from last April 1. Otherwise action would be taken to recover the amounts by seizing and auctioning their properties. Ex-chairman Prabhakar had been asked to pay a surcharge amount of Rs.19.38 crores. -Correspondent

Tributes to Kotla

KURNOOL: The leaders and top officials paid rich tributes to Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy on the occasion of his 87th birth anniversary here on Wednesday. Kotla Surya Prakasa Reddy, MP, along with his wife and K. Sujathamma, Dhone MLA, Minister for Lift Irrigation M. Mareppa, Collector M. Dana Kishore, Superintendent of Police P. B. Malla Reddy, Zilla Parishad chairman L. Venkata Swamy and Mayor S. Raghurami Reddy visited `Kisanghat' on the bank of Hundri and paid floral tributes. The leaders recalled that Vijayabhaskar Reddy initiated many works that would keep his name alive for generations. -Staff Reporter

New police quarters

KADAPA: The Government has sanctioned Rs. 5 crores for constructing 100 quarters for police personnel in Kadapa district, according to Andhra Pradesh Police Housing Corporation Chairman Ramalingeswara Raju. While inspecting Kadapa II Town police station and deputy jailor quarters here on Wednesday, he urged engineers to ensure qualitative construction. The Government had granted Rs. 1 crore for renovating the dilapidated quarters, he said. -Staff Reporter
