MANGALORE: Dakshina Kannada Parisarasaktha Okkoota here has opposed the move to transfer the Kadri Park area for the construction of a retail outlet by Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL). In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, okkoota president Vittal Rao noted that the district administration had allotted 1.50 acres of the park coming under the Horticulture Department to MRPL. The Park (Preservation) Act, 1975 clearly prohibited transfer of parkland for other activities. The proposed outlet would increase traffic congestion on National Highway 17. The presence of two other retail outlets in the vicinity saw the presence of a large number of trucks being parked there. Mr. Rao said the proposed retail outlet of MRPL could be established at an alternative location without causing inconvenience to people. He also questioned the basis for the Deputy Commissioner's order that had cited the decision of the Government to transfer the land to MRPL on a premise that the Horticulture Department had not properly utilised the land acquired for the purpose. Protests by the department against this encroachment by MRPL had been in vain, he said. The okkoota urged the district administration to reconsider its decision in this regard.
